Winchester must have been thinking the same thing when it introduced the Model 88 in 1955. Scholarly Debate: Winchester 88 vs. Savage I must agree that the BLR in 308 would be perfect for what you want. I have owned all three and the BLR is my choice. My gunsmith can take a pile of gun parts and presto he has them assembled. He did say the Win 88 is tricky. If he finds it tricky---it is. Don't you just love that 88? I gave my 1957 model to my grandson. It's .308---has Pachmyr decellerator recoil pad, 2x-7x compact Leupold and an extra magazine in a leather pouch that attaches to the sling.

Winchester Model 88 Caliber .308 Dec 11, 2004: ... Accuracy is usually good. With a quality scope and good ammunition, three-shot groups of 1 1/4 to 1 1/2 inches are a reasonable expectation. My .284 has produced five-shot groups under an inch, though I wouldn't claim to do so on demand.

A 308 Marlin with ammunition, or 500 cases would be of interest. At this time I would not consider it a good investment. A good Winchester 88 lacks a great trigger, but it is a deer rifle not a target rifle. It is chambered for good flat shooting rounds. I would take it over the Marlin 336. I have fired an 88, but I have never hunted with one.
