If the stainless steel chosen was austenitic, e.g. type 316, and a portion of the microstructure were changed to any one of the other four classes then the material would have some magnetic permeability, i.e. magnetism, built into the steel.

A totally non-magnetic material has a relative magnetic permeability of 1. Austenitic structures are totally non-magnetic and so a austenitic stainless steel would have a permeability of 1. In practice this is not achieved. There is always a small amount of ferrite and/or martensite in the steel and so permeability values are always above 1.

Least Magnetic Stainless Steel. There exists another category of stainless steel that is non-magnetic. One such example is stainless steel type 304, and they contain 18% chromium and 8% nickel. Furthermore, they have small amounts of manganese, nitrogen, and carbon. Another famous non-magnetic stainless steel is type 904L.
