Last month, we discussed the rationale for milling raw feed ingredients and the various milling options available. In this issue, we explain the basic physical characteristics of roller mill and hammer mills.

Animal Feed Hammer Mills. Hammer mills are mostly impact grinders with swinging or stationary steel bars forcing ingredients against a circular screen or solid serrated section designated as a striking plate (Figure 1). Material is held in the grinding chamber until it is reduced to the size of the openings in the screen.

Roller Mills. A roller-mill is a specific type of commercial mill designed to crack, crimp or crush the product being run through it. One of the most common applications for a roller mill is to crack corn for the agricultural industry. However, roller mills require more vigilance to maintain a gap width that will produce the targeted particle size. Roll gap width will change as rolls wear and grain qualities change. Hammermills will require less monitoring by comparison.
